The Faceless Mannequin By Autumn R. Finklea
Happy Monday, Y’all!
The weekend is officially behind us. I don’t know about you, but mine was full — a birthday celebration, business events, and church service all packed into two days. In the middle of running one of my many errands, something unexpected caught my attention: a faceless mannequin dressed in a cute jogging suit.
I paused for a moment.
I stared longer than I expected.
And I felt that gentle nudge in my spirit.
Because sometimes, as women, we can feel just like that mannequin — fully dressed, fully functioning, carrying all the roles and responsibilities… yet feeling unsure of who we really are. How can we hold so many honorable titles — wife, mom, friend, leader — and still feel disconnected from our identity?
Can I be honest?
There have been seasons where I tried to find my identity in how well I lived up to those titles. But the problem was this: I wasn’t including who God says I am in the measurement.
So I began to investigate. I opened my Bible. I prayed. I asked God to show me the truth about me.
Here’s what I’m learning:
God says…
- We are made in His image — Genesis 1:27
- We are His daughters — 1 John 3:1
- We are His masterpiece — Ephesians 2:10
- We are chosen — Colossians 3:12
And before you go any further in your day,
STOP right where you are. Lift your face. Put your eyes back on the God who sees you.
Just like Hagar — alone, overwhelmed, unsure of her identity and her future — you are seen by the One who knows you fully.
Genesis 16:13 (NLT)
“You are the God who sees me.”
“Have I truly seen the One who sees me?”
He sees you.
He knows you.
And your identity is safe in Him.
Prayer
Father God, thank You that we are made in Your image, and that we are seen, chosen, and loved by You. Help us to believe what You say about us and to walk confidently in the identity You’ve given us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection Questions
1. What role or title do you feel most proud of right now?
Take a moment to consider why. What about that role brings you joy, purpose, or gratitude?
2. Choose one scripture to meditate on this week about who God says you are.
Sit with it. Journal what God reveals as you meditate, and pay attention to any shifts in how you see yourself.
