The Right Tool For The Job

There are certain requests I’ve heard from my husband more than once:

“Hey honey, can you grab me a Phillips screwdriver from the tool drawer?”

Depending on the day, I’ve brought him everything except the Phillips — the flathead, the tiny one instead of the big one, or a tool that wasn’t even in the screwdriver family. I wasn’t trying to be difficult; I simply didn’t know the difference. But one thing was certain: only one tool could get the job done.

For the person doing the work, not having the right tool can be frustrating. And for the person trying to help, not understanding the tools can be confusing. But after reflecting, I realized something: ministry works the same way.

We are God’s tools — shaped, chosen, and equipped for specific assignments. But here’s the part we don’t always like to admit:

Not every task is ours to complete.

Sometimes we’re the Phillips. Sometimes we’re the flathead. Sometimes we’re not the tool needed at all.

And that’s not a reason to feel less than.

It’s a reason to pray for alignment.

Because it’s not enough to be a tool in God’s hand if we don’t understand how He intends to use us. The blueprint begins with Him — not our feelings, not our preferences, not our desire to be seen or validated.

The beautiful part is this: the kingdom of God is like a tool belt — filled with different tools, all working toward the same assignment, each serving a different role to build what God desires.

We see this clearly in 1 Chronicles 22 and 28–29. God tells David that he will not build the temple. Instead, David’s assignment is to gather the materials so his son Solomon can build it.

Same mission. Different roles. Both necessary.

David wasn’t less anointed because he didn’t build.

Solomon wasn’t more important because he did.

Each simply fulfilled the role God assigned.

Scripture Reflection

“Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different ministries, but the same Lord. And there are different activities, but the same God works all of them in each person.”

— 1 Corinthians 12:4–6 (CSB)

This passage reminds us that God is the One who distributes gifts, ministries, and assignments. We don’t choose our role — we receive it. And the same God who equips us is the One who empowers us.

Different tools. Same Spirit. Same Lord. Same God at work.

When we embrace the gift He placed in us, we stop striving to be someone else’s tool and start walking confidently in who He created us to be.

Reflection Question

What is one way God might be positioning or pruning you so you can be used more effectively?

Prayer

Father, thank You for shaping me for Your purposes. Align my heart with Your assignment and teach me to embrace the role You’ve given me. Use my life to build what matters to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
